New Samsung Gear VR Headset Release Date ‘Soon’ But ‘A Surprise;’ No Support For Galaxy Note 5?

Samsung's Unpacked event came and went but no new Gear VR headset was unveiled. But according to an exec, a new version will roll out "soon."

Speaking to CNET, Samsung co-CEO JK Shin said an updated version of their virtual reality device is coming "soon." An exact release date was not mentioned although Shin teased it will be "a surprise."

"Samsung has tended to introduce new versions of its Gear VR headset when it launches new flagship phones, but it didn't say anything about virtual reality during Thrusday's Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ launch in New York," CNET noted.

According to Tech Times, the first iteration of the device was launched last year together with the Galaxy Note 4. Earlier this year in March, an updated version was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.

Conspicuously missing from last week's event is news about the third-gen Samsung Gear VR headset's release date which is compatible with the latest Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ devices.

Unfortunately for virtual reality enthusiasts hoping to snatch up those devices, those may not work with the current Innovator Edition Gear VR.

VR Focus reported that Reddit user Mallmagician supposedly tried the Note 5 with the Gear VR but found that it wouldn't fit.

"Mallmagician also noted that device didn't feature any apps or services relating to Gear VR, VR, Samsung Gear VR of co-creator Oculus VR as seen in images taken by them."

But those who want the virtual reality device to work with the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ may not have to wait that long.

According to Tech Times, speculations suggest that the updated Samsung Gear VR headset's release date may be at next month's IFA 2015 in Berlin where the round Gear S2 smartwatch will also launch.

"By September 3, we will know what surprises, if any, Samsung has up its sleeve."
