Will Oscar Pistorius Meet Barry Steenkamp After Being Released? Do They Want Him Back In Jail?

Oct 27, 2015 02:33 PM EDT | By Pam Amantiad

Disgraced Olympic gold medallist, Oscar Pistorius was released from prison earlier this month after spending a year in jail for culpable homicide.

He admitted to shooting his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, through the bathroom door of his home on Valentines' Day 2013.

While many South Africans opposed the decision that he spend the remaining time of his five-year sentence in house arrest, the Steenkamps themselves, reportedly did not wish for him to rot in jail.

"I don't wish suffering on anyone, and that is not going to bring Reeva back..." News24 quoted the late model and aspiring laywer's mother, June, as saying. "I don't want revenge. I am past that and once you have told God you are going to forgive, you have to forgive. I don't want him to suffer... I would certainly not want to hurt another human being."

On the other hand, the patriarch of the Steenkamp family expressed his desire to meet his daughter's killer face-to-face some day.

"I think I will get more closure one day if I get the chance to speak to Oscar myself," he said in an interview with South Africa's M-Net TV channel. "Most probably I wouldn't have to say anything. I will just have to look at him... but that is what I would like to do one day."

Nevertheless, Oscar Pistorius isn't being released from jail scot-free. He will still have to face the Supreme Court to face the prosecutor's appeal to impose a tougher sentence on Nov. 3.

Barry Steenkamp admitted that the family would have "time to settle down" once the appeal is done.

"It will give a lot of us closure, whether it is good or bad," he shared,, with his wife adding that she wanted her daughter's murderer to realize "what he has taken away from us."

AFP further reported that while the terms for Oscar Pistorius' release weren't made public, but he was supposedly compelled to meet with the Steenkamps if they wished for a meeting.
