Nov 11, 2013 04:52 PM EST | By Justin Stock

Service members who are currently stationed or have finished their time at war, are acknowledged with an 11-percent discount at Dollar General stores in honor of Veterans Day Monday the company said in a press release.

"Dollar General is happy to offer this discount to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in our military and their families," said Dave D'Arezzo, Dollar General's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "At Dollar General our mission is Serving Others and we are committed to supporting those who serve our country. Helping these veterans and military families stretch their budgets and enjoy great savings is a way to honor their service and commemorate Veterans Day." The offer applies to items bought in Dollar General over 11,000 stores, and purchases made online at www.dollargeneral.com. It does not apply to tobacco, alcohol, gift cards, and propane.

The recognition is part of Dollar General's affiliation with "Paychecks for Patriots" which consists of employers in state governments and those more private, helping veterans find work, and handle other issues Veterans have about employment. Veterans can also interact with Dollar General through their Twitter account, with the hash tag #Veteranssave, and #DGsupportsvets

Dollar General established the program in conjunction with Tennessee's Departments of Labor, Military and Veterans Affairs to make jobs, available to veterans via internet resources, and hiring fairs.

The year-old program has already been extended into Florida, and Georgia, while Dollar General has held its second hiring event in Tennessee.

Dollar General provides food, snacks, health products, beauty aids, cleaning supplies, clothes, house items, and items for each season at discounted prices the press release reported.

The products are made by several companies including Procter and Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg's, General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.
