‘The Voice’ Season 9 Recap: Top 12 Battle Out Before Live Eliminations, Jordan Smith Shines Again

After hailing the Top 12 last week, artists from Team Adam, Team Gwen, Team Blake and Team Pharrell battle it out on Monday's live shows for America's vote.

The show started with host Carson Daly, the coaches and the top 12 artists paying tribute to the victims of the recent Paris attack.

Then came the live shows. Starting the battle of the Top 12 artists was Braiden Sunshine from Team Gwen performing "Renegade" by Styx. Gwen was nervous about allowing Braiden to do the Styx hit but Braiden rocked it out and had the coaches raving about his performance.

Team Adam's Amy Vachal came next with an interesting choice: Drake's "Hotline Bling." With a guitar, Vachal made her own classy, stripped-down version of Drake's hit. "I don't think there's ever been a more elegant and classy performance of a song about a booty call," said Blake, who bragged that rumored girlfriend Gwen sang it to him on "The Tonight Show."

Team Pharrell's Mark Hood showed a different side of him by taking on Phil Collins' "Against All Odds." Refinery29, in its review, said that Pharrell made the right choice of saving Mark Hood.

Next was Team Blake's Emily Ann Roberts with Patti Loveless' "Blame It On Your Heart." Last week, Emily's "In The Garden" peaked at No. 2 on the iTunes Charts. This week, Gwen called her performance "cute."

Fifth to perform was Korin Bukowski of Team Gwen who chose David Guetta's "Titanium" for her artist. Korin brought out her powerful vocals and Blake said that she "nailed" her performance. Korin was followed by Barrett Baber of Team Blake who gave a real and honest rendition of the 1989 rock ballad "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx. He was followed by Team Pharrell's Madi Davis with a reggae-themed rendition of Jewel's "Who Will Save Your Soul." After the performance, Blake said that Madi "snuck up on him."

Team Gwen's Jeffrey Austin did a powerful performance of James Bay's "Let It Go." "How hot does he look right now with his hair dyed?" Gwen gushed about Austin's new look. Adam said that there's more to come from Jeffrey.

Shelby Brown of Team Adam took on Jamey Johnson's "In Color." During rehearsals, Brown broke down after struggling with confidence issues. She knocked it out, however, in her performance in the Live Shows. She was followed by Evan McKeel of Team Pharrell who chose Michael Jackson's "This Is It." Gwen commented, ""There was something so free about you tonight."

Next was Team Adam's Jordan Smith, whose "Halo" cover last week topped the iTunes charts. This week, he chose to do a strip-down performance of the gospel song, "Great is Thy Faithfulness," which had the coaches thanking him, saying it restored and rejuvenated spirits after a tragic attack in Paris. It was one of the season's high points, New York Daily News noted in its report.

Last to perform was Zach Seabaugh of Team Blake who performed "My Love" by Little Texas. This week, he chose to show a softer and more romantic side after last week's groovy performance. Shelton wanted Zach to connect with the audience, which he did.

At the end of the show, Blasting News reports that Jordan Smith once again ruled the charts with "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" landing at No. 2, followed by Amy Vachal at No. 18 with "Hotline Bling," Barrett Baber at No. 26 with "Right Here Waiting," closely followed by Jeffrey Austin at No. 28 with "Let It Go" and closing out the top five in the iTunes charts is Emily Ann Roberts at No. 44 with "Blame it on Your Heart."
