LG Pulls Out Watch Urbane 2nd Edition Over Hardware Issue; Smartwatch’s Future Uncertain

Dec 10, 2015 12:30 PM EST | By Jason Fonbuena

Hardware issues prompted LG to pull out its Watch Urbane 2nd Edition from the shelves soon after its launch. A recall has not been announced although it's unknown whether the Android Wear smartwatch will go back on sale.

Although it can't fully disclose the details due to "competitive and supplier relations reasons," LG told The Telegraph that the hardware issue stems from "a new advanced component" that they haven't used on other wearable devices before.

"During aggressive testing over thousands of hours under severe conditions, it was revealed that this component failed to meet LG's quality standards and could potentially impact our image quality over the life of the device," the South Korean tech firm added.

Per the website, LG hasn't indicated if it will recall already-sold units.

Those who already picked up an LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition need not worry about their personal safety.

In the same statement, LG assured the said issue "has no bearing whatsoever on the safety of the device or the wearer." The company went on to say that it's simply something that "might affect the user experience of the [smartwatch] over the long term."

9to5Google reported AT&T and Verizon have followed LG's lead and cancelled the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition's roll out. Per the website, the former is offering refunds or the ability to swap with another smartwatch while the latter stopped pre-order deliveries.

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition isn't like any other Android Wear smartwatch.

"It adds 3G and 4G coverage on the go, voice call and speaker functionality, a 348ppi display, bigger battery and multiple function buttons to what we've seen before on the Watch Urbane," Wareable said.

For now, the future of the device looks uncertain as LG told Android Police that whether it will resume sales "will be decided at a later time."
