Breaking Bad Director Vince Gilligan Thought True Detective Will Win Best Drama Series Because His Show Has Been Out For A Year

Breaking Bad is the biggest winner in the recently concluded 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. The AMC drama series bagged Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Bryant Cranston, Supporting Actress for Anna Gunn, Supporting Actor for Aaron Paul, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Many fans think that this dominance is something that has been written on the wall. That Walter White and his crew owning the awards show is a sure thing. However, for Breaking Bad director Vince Gilligan, he didn't think that their appearance at the Emmy's would be flawless. In fact, he didn't think that they would walk away (again) with the Best Drama Series.

“I didn’t think we would win — I thought it would be True Detective,” Gilligan said during the AMC party in Los Angeles, California.

‘We’ve been off the air now for a year and a half.'”

Well, True Detective definitely makes a really close competitor for the award. However, according to some entertainment analysts, a win for the HBO crime drama was far-fetched because 1) it was nominated in the wrong category, 2) this is Breaking Bad's last Emmy awards show, 3) True Detective's final episode was weaker than Breaking Bad's Felina.

Nevertheless, Breaking Bad director Vince Gilligan expressed his gratitude for the recognitions he received for his show.

“This is the icing on the cake,” he said. “It’s the cherry on top. It’s the hot fudge. I’m getting hungry.”

Gilligan also discussed the less-hyped victory of her colleague, Moira Walley-Beckett who won the Best Writing in a series for the episode Ozymandias. Becket has become the first solo woman to win such award since Ann Biderman who won for NYPD Blue in 1994.

“That’s a sad statement, really — that [it's] been 20 years,” he said. “That’s a sobering bit of history, but I’m sure glad Moira was the one who broke the streak. She wrote one of the best episodes we’ve ever had of Breaking Bad, and I’m so glad she won for it.”
