Formula 1 News: Rosberg Apologizes For Crash, Mercedes To Hold Crunch Talks Between Drivers Before Moving Forward, Fans Say Let Drivers Race

Aug 30, 2014 07:57 AM EDT | By Fred Yelland

The collision between Mercedes Benz drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton last week at Spa-Francorchamps has brought tension between the two drivers and their team.

Hamilton claims that the collision was done "on purpose to prove a point". The contact between the cars ultimately forced Hamilton to retire in the second lap, with Rosberg finishing in second place. Lews Hamilton is currently 29 point behind in the drivers championship.

Hamilton stated that "The weekend was damaging," but has vowed that there will be no retaliation.

"I don't know how I'm going to get back those 29 points, but what I do know is I've a great group of people behind me."

"The poor guys on my side of the garage have had quite a lot of bad races.

"But I know with their support and that of the fans, the fact we've a great car, a great team and we should be finishing one-two, I really hope I can bring them some good results moving forwards.

"Whatever the case I will always put the team first and I won't take anything into my own hands."

Toto Wolff and Pady Lowe of Mercedes Benz have called for a meeting between the two drivers before movie forward. The point of the meeting will decide a course of action that will help increase the team's title opportunity and not diminish it. Wolff has announced that he was considering all options including driver orders but made it clear that no decision is final until after speaking to both drivers: "That's to be decided (on imposing team orders). If we really want to do that, it would be disappointing for all of us, but we need to get on top of the situation and we haven't figured out what that means.

Mercedes fans have voiced out on social media, 90% of which believes that the drivers should be free to race.
