Morpheus, the King of the Dreaming is officially a film character as Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" graphic novel is coming to theaters worldwide.

"Sandman" is a graphic novel, created by award winning English novelist Neil Gaiman, with the first issue released in 1989. The story revolves around Morpheus, also known as Dream, who is one of the seven Endless. His "siblings" or the other Endless are Desire, Death, Destiny, Delirium, Despair and Destruction.

"Sandman" deals with the relationship of Morpheus towards the other Endless as numerous subplots involving known historical figures like the biblical characters Cain and Abel, Lucifer Morningstar, even Markus Aurelius occur simultaneously.

Talks on a film adaptation of the film began early in the 1990s. However, after numerous drafts of "Sandman" movie have been deemed unaccepted by Gaiman. A displeased Gaiman shared with Mania.com, "I'd rather see no 'Sandman' movie made than a bad 'Sandman movie. But I feel like the time for a 'Sandman' movie is coming soon. We need someone who has the same obsession with the source material as Peter Jackson had with the 'Lord of the Rings' or Sam Raimi had with 'Spider Man'."

After years of planning, finally there is an official "Sandman" movie 2016 in the works. According to Deadline.com, 'Jack Thorne has been set to script 'Sandman' at Warner Bros based on the pitch that David Goyer made for his treatment for the Neil Gaiman comic book classic. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is producing with Goyer and the hope is for him to star and possibly direct."

With the news of "Sandman" movie 2016, Gaiman shares his thoughts during the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose saying, "Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of all people, is an enormous Sandman fan. He and David Goyer talked about it, they've come up, I believe, with a treatment of what they want the story of the first movie to be. They are talking to an incredible writer [Jack Thorne], who I coincidentally already knew, because he did the movie script for The Ocean at the End of the Lane, so I've met him and loved his treatment of my work."

"Sandman" movie 2016 is set for December release.
