The Goodwill store on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut, is set to move to a new spot that's easier to get to-all in one night. This popular thrift store, just a 20-minute drive north of New Haven, isn't just changing its address-it's upgrading to a larger space nearby.

The move promises a seamless transition for shoppers, with the doors reopening without any service pausing.

Goodwill Prepares for Swift Relocation

One of the two Goodwill stores in Hamden is gearing up for a big move. Marcus Notz, the chief information officer for marketing and public relations at Goodwill, shared with the New Haven Register that it's heading to a former Rite Aid building on Dixwell Avenue, just a half-mile away.

The store is scheduled to shut its doors in mid-May.

But don't worry, it won't be gone for long. The plan is to move everything to the new location overnight and welcome shoppers back the next day. "We're hoping there will be no lengthy closure," Notz explained, aiming for a smooth transition that feels uninterrupted.

Shoppers and donors at the local Goodwill can rest easy during its upcoming move. As indicated by a banner at the store, the original location will continue to accept donations until the new store opens.

A staff member has pointed out that those looking to donate furniture can take it to Goodwill's outlet store at 2901 State Street in Hamden.

As of April 21, 2021, Goodwill boasts a nationwide presence with 4,245 stores, reports Rentech Digital. California leads the count with 451 stores, followed by Florida with 359 and Texas with 340, highlighting Goodwill's significant footprint in the United States.

Marcus Notz, Goodwill's chief marketing and public relations officer, shared updates on the future of the Dixwell Avenue store. In a recent phone conversation, Notz revealed that the store will move to a new location in mid-May.

The transition to the new building, which is currently undergoing renovations, will happen overnight, allowing the store to reopen the following day.

"We're hoping there will be no lengthy closure," Notz expressed, emphasizing the aim for a seamless move without disruption.

In preparation for the move, the store still welcomes donations at its current location, with a sign indicating this. However, all donations except furniture are being accepted; furniture can be taken to Goodwill's outlet on 2901 State Street in Hamden.

Notz also reflected on the history of the current store, which spans roughly 7,000 square feet near the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Skiff Street. Having operated there for about 20 years, Notz noted the site was "never ideal" due to its small size and limited parking.

He shared that the quest for a better location within the desirable Dixwell commercial corridor has been a long-standing challenge, highlighting the significance of this move.

Notz highlighted the struggle to find a suitable space for Goodwill in a competitive area, leading to the acquisition of a 10,720-square-foot former Rite Aid property for $3.3 million in December 2023.

This new location promises convenience with a donation drive-thru and more parking. All Dixwell Avenue employees will retain their jobs, with additional hires planned for the expanded operation, ensuring a smooth transition and bolstered community service.
