Alibaba dealing with telecom honchos to bring free internet to India

The idea of free internet services has been around in India for quite some time now. What Facebook started as Free Basics program, which stirred the net neutrality debate in India and could not get TRAI’s approval went on to help Reliance Jio establish itself in the India telecom market. Jio is currently offering free Internet and content services to its users until March 31 after which users will have to pay for its services.

According to a report on Business Insider India, Alibaba group’s UCWeb is in talks with Indian telecom operators and Wi-Fi providers to bring free internet, lower cost data and higher quality connections to the country. UCWeb is the Internet services subsidiary of Alibaba in China with its flagship product being the popular UC Browser.
