[WATCH] ‘Doctor Who’ Season 9: It’s The Doctor’s ‘Duty’ To Find Gallifrey Says Peter Capaldi

The Doctor is still looking for Gallifrey. "Doctor Who" season 9 star Peter Capaldi revealed this and more during an interview at SDCC 2015 earlier this month.

In a carpet interview, Capaldi told io9 how important it is for The Doctor to find his home world.

"I think he does absolutely want to find Gallifrey. It's a duty. In some ways, the Doctor is quite an old-fashioned character. He does have a recognition of duties and loyalties, but these are things that are deep-set in him. I don't think he'll ever feel satisfied that Gallifrey is safe until he finds it. And of course, he is still riven with guilt about what he's put Gallifrey through."

As Blastr noted, fans last saw the Time World's home planet in the show's 50th Anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor" in 2013. Thought to be lost forever in the Time War, it turned out Gallifrey is still around.

But after what happened between The Doctor and Rassilon (Timothy Dalton) in "The End of Time," why would he even want to return?

"It's not all horrible is it," showrunner Steven Moffat said. Not everyone on the planet is responsible for what happened after all and "the Doctor would know that."

"If the Doctor does ever find Gallifrey, some people are in for an arse-kicking. But he knows - he knows! - that it's not people like us, the sad scum of Earth, on Gallifrey, who are responsible for the terrible crimes of the High Council. And just remember that the High Council was always sort of terrible, even on the classic series."

Meanwhile, Michelle Gomez said Missy does in fact know where Gallifrey is, according to Doctor Who TV. Fans may recall that The Master, then played by John Simm, was trapped in the planet at the end of "The End of Time."

The show has yet to explain how he managed to escape.

But will Peter Capaldi's Doctor actually find Gallifrey on "Doctor Who" season 9? Find out when it premieres on September 15 on BBC One.
