Flaming Hot Crunchy Cheetos Among Snacks Sending Youths to Hospital

Large consumptions of hot and strong snacks are making children land in the hospital Fox News reported Monday.

"We have a population who loves to eat the hot, spicy, not-real foods, and they come in [to the emergency room] with these real complaints," Dr. Martha Rivera of White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles told KABC-TV. "I've seen a number of children who eat four or five bags and come in screaming in pain. [The kids are being] set up for ulcerations, erosions and... peptic ulcer disease. "It burns when it goes down, it burns when it comes out. You set up for ulcerations, erosions and so you can set up to get peptic ulcer disease in these children."

Individuals who consume the snack run the risk of experiencing Gastritis or condition that flares up the stomach according to KABC-TV. Rivera normally sees at least six instances where children have the condition.

"Like if you have a bruise or something. It really hurts a lot," Andrew Medina, a 12-year-old in California told KABC. Medina was brought to a medical professional when he was having the uncomfortable pain. Medina normally consumes 20 to 30 bags along with other food items.

The sensation has made many school districts in New Mexico, California, and Illinois to disallow students from eating the snack on school property.

"Food such as beets or red peppers can make stool appear red, however it is not actually blood in the stool," Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician for New York's Lenox Hill Hospital told CBSNews.com last month. "A number of patients who have consumed these Cheetos in excess have complained of pain in their upper abdomen, rising up into their chest, likely due to due to the red peppers and spice contained in the snack."

The snack is not meant for youths 12 and under according to Frito-Lay KABC reported.

"(The company) is committed to responsible and ethical marketing practices, which includes not marketing our products to children ages 12 and under," Frito-Lay told KABC.
