Dunkin Donuts Releases Festive Holiday Cups, Provide Alternative to Starbucks Controversial Cups

Nov 12, 2015 01:02 AM EST | By Jean-Claude Arnobit

Dunkin' Donuts has just released their new line of holiday cups that features the word "Joy" surrounded by images of wreaths and holly for the Christmas season, according to a report from the New York Post.

The new cup design is a festive alternative to Starbucks' conservative and controversial cup design.

The New York Post adds that Starbucks' holiday cups features an all-red design decorated only with the company's logo.

This is a stark contrast to Starbucks' previous holiday cups, which features an assortment of Christmas themed illustrations such as snowflakes, ornaments, and various winter scenes.

The New York Post adds that religious conservatives and other advocates believe that Starbucks's move to remove the designs in this year's holiday cup is part of a national movement.

They believe that there's a national movement to phase out Christian-themed decorations from the holiday season.

The New York Post adds that the hashtag #MerryChristmasStarbucks went viral after a self-described Christian activist called out the company for their political correctness in a video posted online.

USA Today adds that Starbucks has not responded to Dunkin' Donuts new design and are sticking by their design.

The company is saying that all-red blank canvas allows their customers to put their own unique drawings and messages for the holiday season.

Dunkin' Donuts, though, did not release the cup to take a shot at Starbucks.

Scott Hudler, the vice president of global consumer engagement at Dunkin' Donuts, told The Huffington Post that they have used the word "Joy" in their during the holiday season for years.

"For many years Dunkin' Donuts has served coffee in festive cups featuring the word 'joy' as part of our annual celebration of the season and holiday offerings," he said. "We believe this conveys the happiness and spirit of the holiday season in a way that resonates with our guests."

The Huffington Post adds that the cups have arrived as the same time that Dunkin' Donuts introduced its holiday-themed goodies.

Included in its holiday-themed goodies is the snickerdoodle croissant.
