Washington Redskins Roster And Schedule: Robert Griffin III Could Return This Season; Kirk Cousins Ready To Replace RG3

A recent Washington Redskins roster and schedule update revealed that Robert Griffin III might return to play again this season despite dislocating his left ankle. But while he is out, Kirk Cousins is ready to take charge.

ESPN reported that Griffin, who dislocated his left ankle during their 41-10 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, will not need to undergo surgery after an MRI revealed no fracture in his ankle.

The Redskins have yet to give a timetable for Griffin's return, but Griffin said that the MRI result was a positive news for him, expressing optimism that he will recover in time to play again this season.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said that they will know the extent of the injury once Dr. Robert Anderson finishes analyzing the MRI results. But from the looks of it, Gruden is confident that their star quarterback will not miss the entire season.

"It's just a bump in the road for him. It's another little bit of adversity he's going to have to overcome," Gruden said in a Washington Redskins roster and schedule update on Fox Sports. "And part of being a quarterback is your mental toughness and ability to overcome adversity, and he's done it in the past, he'll do it again and we have total faith that he'll bounce back and be as good as ever soon."

Griffin, who has completed 31-of-40 passes for 305 yards this season, also suffered major injuries in 2012, including a torn ACL, but Gruden believes that the 24-year-old will return stronger - physically and mentally - once he recovers from the latest setback.

And while Griffin is out, Washington Redskins roster and schedule news suggested that backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to take his spot, and Gruden believes that the 26-year-old will be up to the challenge.

"We were trying not to make this about Robert when Robert was the quarterback," Gruden said. "We're going to try not to make this about Kirk now that Kirk's the quarterback. We've got to make this about the Redskins moving forward."

Cousins, a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, impressed during their game against the Jaguars as he completed 22-of-33 passes for 250 yards with two touchdown and no interception.

The Redskins will look to take their second win in three games when they go up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at the Lincoln Financial Field.
