New subscribers who want to avail the Netflix 4k Ultra HD option must first pay $11.99 family monthly plan. The family plan actually lets four users avail the premium video using one account. The standard Netflix subscription plan allows only two users. This year standard HD subscribers also got an increase in their monthly subscription from $7.99 to $8.99.

Netflix explained that the production and acquisition costs of 4K contents are higher than the standard HD videos. Netflix is now offering the 4K UHD as a premium option to its subscribers. Those who availed the 4K contents subscription before the increase will still pay the old monthly rate.

In a Variety interview, a Netflix Spokesperson told the magazine, "We decided to move 4K UHD video into four-stream plan for new members who sign up and care about the highest-quality video Netflix offers." The spokesperson also mentioned that they have added several new series to their 4K UHD catalog such as "Breaking Bad", "House of Cards", "The Blacklist" and other upcoming exclusive Netflix television series. Aside from the television series, movies such as "Ghostbusters 1 and 2", Smurfs 2 and a nature documentary mini-series called "Moving Art" are also included.

Although the online video streaming company is increasing its 4K UHD contents, the collection is still a modest one compared to its standard HD collections.

A 4K Ultra HD format has four times the resolution of a standard HD and colors are much more vibrant. In order to appreciate the 4K HD format, you must have a television that supports Ultra HD. Vizio, Sony, Samsung and LG are among the handful manufacturers who offer Ultra HD television sets.

A robust internet connection is also a requirement if you want to enjoy the 4K UHD content. Netflix recommends that subscribers must have a connection speed of around 25 mbps or higher, in order to download a 4K UHD content that you want to watch.
