McDonald's leaders got an unexpected suggestion from President Donald Trump during the company's 2025 Impact Summit, when he told the crowd he wanted one simple change to a classic menu item.

"I like the fish. I like it. You could do a little bit more tartar sauce, so please," Trump said, referring to the Filet-O-Fish, USA Today reported.

He joked that he hates asking for extra sauce and encouraged the chain to consider adding more by default.

Trump, speaking to franchise owners and executives on Nov. 17, mixed humor with his comments about the menu.

He again told the story of his 2024 campaign stop where he worked behind the counter at a McDonald's, calling himself the "first former McDonald's fry cook ever to become president."

He added that he was "there for about 30 minutes," claiming it was "30 minutes longer" than Kamala Harris' reported time at the fast-food chain.

The president also thanked the McDonald's employee who informed his campaign that Harris never worked there. He then shifted to praise for the company itself, calling himself one of McDonald's "all-time most loyal customers."

Trump said his campaign planes carried McDonald's instead of expensive catered meals and shared a story about getting Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to try a Big Mac. "He loved it," Trump said, adding that Kennedy "didn't want that publicized."

Trump Credits McDonald's for Lower Food Prices

After the menu jokes, Trump talked about rising prices and affordability. He said some items, like coffee, were still "a little high," but promised efforts to lower costs.

According to FoxBusiness, he pointed to recent price drops in breakfast foods, saying, "In the past six months, the price of breakfast items has fallen 14%. Bread prices are down, dairy prices are down, and the price of eggs has declined 86% since March."

He credited McDonald's for helping cut costs on popular items, calling the company a partner in improving affordability.

Trump said the economy was rebounding, claiming the stock market reached all-time highs 48 times in nine months.

"The American people are seeing that the country is doing better," he said, predicting that "new heights of prosperity" were ahead.

He closed his speech by praising McDonald's workers and leaders. "You're respected all over the world, and it's an honor to be with McDonald's," he said, telling the audience that the company plays an important role in the country's recovery.
