McDonald's Considers Adding Kale To Menu Options As Sales And Popularity Continues To Dwindle

Mar 12, 2015 05:44 PM EDT | By Michael Smith

McDonald's is considering adding kale to its menu list, a move many are saying is a response to declining interest in fast-food venues and increased interest in healthier dining.

"McDonald's clearly aims to raise consumers' perception of the quality of its food," wrote restaurant analyst Mark Kalinowski in a note explaining the restaurant's plans, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"Adding kale to the menu in some way could help be a step in this direction."

The possible addition of kale to menu items such as burgers and salads are part of the company's recent efforts to rebrand itself.

The company's new Chief Executive Officer Steve Easterbrook is confronting worse-than-expected sales for the month of February.

The company has reported its ninth straight month of shrinking same-store sales, with the United States accounting for a four-percent decline, Bloomberg reports.

"This likely ups the urgency in terms of this new management team putting a plan out there to turn around the business," Stephens Inc. analyst Will Slabaugh told the site.
