Arby's Releases Extended Ad Targeting Subway's Freshness Claims

Nov 02, 2012 02:31 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Arby's is continuing its campaign against Subway whose tagline is "Eat Fresh," claiming that it doesn't offer freshly sliced meat to its customers.

Arby's first rolled out an ad last month which featured a retired New York Police Department detective investigating where and how Subway slices its meat, revealing that they are sliced in an Iowa factory.

Iowan were upset over the ad, according to an the Des Moines Register, so Subway released an edited ad which took out the word "Iowa" and just said the sliced turkey comes from a factory and is not sliced fresh in the store like Arby's does.

"Please know that in no way was the advertising ever designed to disparage the state of Iowa, but rather the advertising was meant to dramatize the distance between Subway's slicing facilities and any given Subway restaurant," said Arby's chief marketing officer Russ Klein in a statement.

Now the battle between these two sandwich franchises continues. Arby's released an extended version featuring the same detective investigating. He also interviews former Subway employees, or "sandwich artists," and customers on the street to hit home that its meat isn't sliced in the back of the store as commonly believed.
