Nation’s Only Marijuana-Themed Restaurant Franchise Opening in Madison

Jan 26, 2013 07:07 PM EST | By Staff Reporter

Cheba Hut "Toasted" Subs, the nation's only marijuana-themed restaurant franchise, is opening in Madison on Jan. 26 at 453 Gillman Street.

With stores operating on or near college campuses throughout the country, each Cheba Hut offers one-of-a-kind sandwiches, signature salads and a unique, relaxed atmosphere.

The Madison location will also feature local brews on tap, making it the first and only sub shop in Madison to serve beer. Featured beers will include favorites from New Glarus Brewing, Lake Louie Brewing, Capital Brewery and Ale Asylum.

The grand opening is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and will feature a "Pack the Bus" contest at 3 p.m. Local sororities will compete to fit the most members into the Cheba Hut VW Bus, with the winner receiving a $1,000 donation to a charity of its choice. In addition, the brand's signature ranch-chugging contest will take place at 4 p.m. Participating "ranch-chuggers" will be timed while drinking 24 ounces of ranch dressing for a chance to win free Cheba Hut for a year.

Cheba Hut is discounting menu items all day on Jan. 26. Nugs - the name of its small toasted sub - will be offered for $2. Craft beer will also be sold for $2.

"Cheba Hut's one-of-a-kind brand is a perfect fit for the culture in Madison," said Richard Wooton, local franchisee. "We're excited to finally be part of this awesome community."

With locations in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico, California and Oregon, Cheba Hut's Madison store will be the restaurant's 16th location. The store is creating 16 new jobs for Madison residents.
