Pebble Time Steel Pre-Orders Kick Off! Smartwatch Gets Good Reviews But Should You Get One?

Good news for those who missed Pebble's Kickstarter campaign. Pebble Time Steel pre-orders are now up. And while the smartwatch is getting good reviews, should you get one yourself?

Wareable reported that the Pebble has announced pre-orders for the Time Steel.

"The bad news is that there's an estimated wait of six to eight weeks for shipping, making it most likely you'll get the premium Pebble at the end of September if you order now," the website said.

Franchise Herald previously reported that Kickstarter backers will begin receiving their Time Steel smartwatches this month. But due to manufacturing problems, those who ordered the metal band will have to wait for it to ship separately at a later date.

Similarly, Pebble Time Steel pre-orders, priced at $249, will "come standard with a genuine Italian leather band," according to Pebble.

"The matching steel bands in black matte, silver and gold will be available for order later this year as a separate $49.99 accessory."

Finished in gunmetal black, brushed silver or gold, the Time Steel competes with Android Wear alternatives such as the Moto 360 and Asus ZenWatch, as well as the Apple Watch.

For Android users, CNET said the Pebble is "a tempting alternative to Android Wear" but "iPhone owners would probably be better off with the Apple Watch."

In its review of the wearable device, the website noted how the Time Steel is "more [of a] budget-friendly watch [and] not a high-end device."

Although Engadget praised the Time Steel's design, build quality and longer battery life, the website wasn't sold on its asking price. Compared to its rivals, the smartwatch "is overpriced."

Compared to other models within Pebble's lineup though, Gizmodo said "the Time Steel is the one to buy."

"For an extra $50, you get a watch that fixes everything wrong with the Time, in a far more attractive package."

Pebble Time Steel pre-orders are now available via their website for $249 for the standard leather band and $299 for the metal band. Buyers will have to wait six to eight weeks for delivery.
