Google May Be Shutting Down Soon? Facebook Is Challenging Search Engine Status Quo With Site Expansion

Online giants Google, Twitter and Facebook will soon be fighting over the search engine crown with Mark Zuckerberg's social media site expanding its search results to all of its 2 trillion public posts. It's like "Game of Thrones" for these sites from now on!

On Oct. 22, Facebook announced its expanded search capability (tagged as "Search FYI") by indexing all 2 trillion of the site's public posts, challenging Google which has always been the master of online searching. The move also takes a stab at Twitter, where have always been able to search strangers' posts using only keywords.

"With over 1.5 billion searches per day and over 2 trillion posts in our index, search is an important, long-term effort at Facebook," wrote Tom Stocky, Vice President of Facebook Search. "The team's goal with Search FYI is to share our progress more frequently,"

Previously, when users search for something using Facebook's search bar, only relevant posts from friends and pages they like appear in the results. Now, the new Facebook bolster will make public posts from people, Pages and Groups viewable by anyone - challenging Google's main selling point: to be able to search anything in the world.

According to Tech Crunch, Facebook search results will be divided to highlight posts from trusted news sources, people within a particular users' social network, popular posts related to the search and then posts from strangers.

"Similar to how Twitter Search works, this move unlocks all the news and chatter shared on Facebook around big news stories and live events, but with a more human focus," the website reported.

"With one tap, you can find public posts about a link, see popular quotes and phrases mentioned in these posts, and check out an aggregate overview of sentiment," Stocky added. "This feature is a first step-we look forward to people using it and giving us feedback so we can make it even better."
