Medical Marijuana Commercial Will Not Air on Comcast: Chance for Ad in Massachusetts

Mar 11, 2014 09:55 AM EDT | By John Nassivera

The rumors of Comcast airing a medical marijuana advertisement on major networks have proven to be false.

While MarijuanaDoctors.com was said to be airing the commercial this past week in different parts of the U.S., the company said the commercial was never broadcast, according to Metro.

The commercial shows a shady-looking man trying to sell sushi and asking the question, "You wouldn't buy your sushi from this guy, so why would you buy your marijuana from him?" The ad was intended to portray the company's service as safe and beneficial, Q13FOX reported.

MarijuanaDoctors.com said last month that it had booked airtime for Comcast and that the commercial was going to first appear on March 3 in New Jersey, Metro reported. Several of the networks that were going to air the ad included Fox News, CNN, Bravo and ESPN. The ad was set to air in Massachusetts around April 20.

According to the rumor, Comcast agreed to air the commercial on local cable systems in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Chicago in order to persuade people to get their medical marijuana legally from doctors through prescriptions. The commercial would appear on major networks, only between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., according to The Celebrity Cafe.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Khoury confirmed on Wednesday that the reports of the commercial were false, The Celebrity Cafe reported. Khoury said that MarijuanaDoctors.com published the press release without getting a final approval for airing the commercial.

"The ad has not appeared on Comcast Spotlight and media reports and press releases to the contrary are incorrect," Khoury said. "All commercials are subject to final review by Comcast Spotlight prior to airing and during that process it was determined that the spot did not meet our guidelines."

MarijuanaDoctors.com spokeswoman Janet Falk said in an email that executives found out that the ad did not air as planned, and that a meeting is scheduled with Comcast, Metro reported. However, there is still a chance that the ad will air in Massachusetts, but not on Comcast.

"MarijuanaDoctors.com has been approached directly by several TV stations and cable networks regarding advertising in Massachusetts," Falk said in the email.
