Futuristic 'Blade Runner' Body Dryer May Replace Towels

Apr 04, 2014 07:17 AM EDT | By John Nassivera

A new device called the Body Dryer has been introduced as a new way to dry the whole body without using a towel.

The idea of the platform was considered due to scientists questioning the towel's ability to contain bacteria, according to CNET. The device has been described as being similar to the futuristic dryer from the film "Blade Runner", without the user having to stick his/her head in a bubble.

The Body Dryer shoots warm air up from the platform when a user stands on it. Compressed blasts of ionized air come out of five nozzles below the body, which create a column of air that covers the whole body as it rises and evaporates the moisture off the person, Deccan Chronicle reported.

Users will have the option to choose between hot and cold air. The device also allows users to save money on water and electricity, which people use when they wash their towels after drying off.

However, people should still keep towels for drying their hair since the device isn't designed to dry a user's hair. It takes the Body Dryer almost 30 seconds to push all of the water off the body. The water is then collected in the platform, which then circulates the air that evaporates into moisture, CNET reported.

The creators of the Body Dryer are hoping to see the device used in gyms and pools so that less laundry is done. A backer for the device said it has been very useful for people with disabilities who can't use a towel as easily as others.

The Body Dryer team has developed a prototype of the device, CNET reported. The device is supported by the Indiegogo campaign, which is looking to achieve its funding goal of $50,000. The regular price for the device is $150, but people who want to buy it early can pre-order the Body Dryer for $125.
