Diane Sawyer-ABC World News Farewell Broadcast Make It Big In Ratings; Check Where The Veteran Anchor Would Go After This

Aug 29, 2014 10:20 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

The broadcast of the Diane Sawyer-ABC World News split made it big in the ratings, a fitting farewell for the anchor who graced the national television with her powerful insights and passionate break down of news. Diane Sawyer signed off from the ABC evening television news after five years. According to the Hollywood reporter, the anchor's swan song episode topped its NBC competition. The episode, which dominantly covered the Ferguson shooting, was the most viewed among adults who are in 25-54 years of age.

Although World News still focused on the more pressing matter, it was still Sawyer's exit that made the headline. The show devoted a two-minute segment that presented the anchor in her feel good moments. The Television Hall of Fame member ended her fruitful five-year run with the show which she first announced in June.

“I just want to say to everyone watching, you have seen David Muir at this desk…You know his command and commitment,” said Sawyer while looking at the man who she her vote of confidence to as her replacement.

“It has been an honor sitting across from you.”

The Diane Sawyer-ABC World News separation even got a mention from their rivals in NBC.

“We wish our good friend and competitor Diane Sawyer well…Good luck, Diane!” said NBC’s substitute anchor Lester Holt during their 6:30 PM broadcast.

While it is sad to see the charismatic Sawyer go, ABC News president James Goldston said that there's no need to get sad as the beloved news anchor will still be with them. He said that "for many years to come ... (she will be) be a driving force at ABC News with her exceptional storytelling genius. She will create innovative television specials and events, and, of course, continue to conduct the biggest interviews with the most important and extraordinary people in the world."
