Syria Civil War Has Displaced More Than Three Million; United Nations Describes This As Biggest Humanitarian Emergency Of Our Era

Aside from the war to stop the terrors being spread by the militant group ISIS, or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, there's another fight the world is probably losing, the fight to prevent millions of people being displaced by the Syria Civil War. This conflict that started in 2011 has already displaced nearly half of the country's total population according to the United Nations. The unrest began when protests were held to topple President Bashar al-Assad whose administration then responded through violent measures. From then, protests turned into armed rebellion, inflicting harm to the innocent and taking away lives.

In a report by the UN refugee agency, it is found out that a record three million Syrians have fled the country and became refugees abroad amid the chaotic condition in the country. The Syria Civil war also forced at least 6.5 million more have also left their original residences to find safer place within the country.

"Almost half of all Syrians have now been forced to abandon their homes and flee for their lives. One in every eight Syrians has fled across the border, fully a million more than a year ago. A further 6.5 million are displaced within Syria. Over half of those uprooted are children," UNHCR said in a statement released on Friday in Geneva.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres described this Syrian crisis as the "biggest humanitarian emergency of our era." This should be getting attention from other world powers, however, the world still fail to "meet the needs of refugees and the countries hosting them."

The UN statement also said that aside from finding shelter for the refugees, it also becomes more difficult for different organization to provide victims their basic needs.

"There are worrying signs too that the journey out of Syria is becoming tougher, with many people forced to pay bribes at armed checkpoints proliferating along the borders. Refugees crossing the desert into eastern Jordan are being forced to pay smugglers hefty sums (US$100 a head or more) to take them to safety," the statement said.
