Michael Phelps 'Sorry' For DUI arrest

Oct 01, 2014 08:47 PM EDT | By Julia Maire Francisco

Michael Phelps has finally addressed his arrest for DUI in Maryland, Tuesday morning.

According to the statement by the Maryland Transportation Authority to E! News, the Olympic Gold Medalist was arrested on September 30 at 1:40 a.m. and was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speen crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95.

To date, this is the second DUI arrest for Phelps, who was pulled over by the police in Maryland and arrested for the same offense in November 2004 at the age of 19.

Authorities said that Phelps was driving about twice the posted speed limit, which is 84 mph in a 45 mph zone, and was not able to pass the series of standard field sobriety tests.

The United States National Swimming team has released a statement about the incident.

"The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool," USA Swimming said.

Phelps does not have any more meets scheduled this year so it's unclear if any disciplinary action will be taken.

Sponsors "Under Armour" and "Aqua Sphere", with whom he signed a multi-year contract last August, are yet to comment about Phepls' arrest.

Previous sponsor "Kellogg's" cut ties with the most decorated Olympian with 22 medals in 2009 after a photo surfaced on the internet in which Phelps is allegedly smoking a marijuana pipe.

The swimmer later apologized for the photo and called his actions "inappropriate."

In 2012, he announced that he will be retiring after the London Games but later revealed that he would be returning to swimming after fixing his schedule.

He won four gold and two silver medals in the said event.

"It's good to have some structure back in my life," he said in a statement in July. "That's how I've always been. That's something I need. I was happy to get that year and a half where I did whatever I wanted, went wherever I wanted. I got that out of the way, and I'm happy to have this back."
