Constantine TV series release date is at least a week away, October 24. Still, that doesn't mean there's no more room for updates and news regarding the upcoming NBC superhero series that is based from DC Comics Hellblazer. Everything is set for the pilot episode of the show which stars Matt Ryan for the title role. It also features Lost alum Harold Perrineau as Manny, the angel assigned to watch Constantine, and Angelica Celaya as the supernatural detective's love interest.
Before having the final Constantine TV series release date, the show knows that they are under the microscope with many hardcore comics fans around the corner, ready to pick on the show's flaws. With the way Keanue Reeve's film was received, the production staff made sure that it won't be taking similar path. First thing that they took care of is hiring an actor that will be convincing to play as a British person. Showrunner David S. Goyer, who is also the creator of Starz's historical fantasy drama Da Vinci's Demons and screenwriter for Batman trilogy, thinks Matt Ryan is the one.
"I wanted somebody who looked like he leapt off the page," Goyer explained during an interview with Buddy TV. "Matt looks like John Constantine and he acts like John Constantine."
Goyer added that they made sure that Constantine will be portrayed as British, with the deep accent and all.
"[Constantine] had to be British, had to have the trench coat, the skinny tie. Even though he's on network, he had to still be a smoker. ...We all know that he gets cancer later on, and that's something that we wanted to give a nod to. He had to be a bastard, sometimes an asshole. That's just who he is. Snarky, and he lies, and he's terrible to the men and women that he sleeps with. He's not your first choice when you think of someone to save the world, but unfortunately, he's the guy we've got."
