Underworld: Next Generation To Be Released: Kate Beckinsale Out Of The Project?

Oct 19, 2014 03:13 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Kate beckinsale will not be returning to Underworld!

That's one of the heart breaking rumors that was spreading online months ago. Kate Beckinsale's--Selene, was a primary character in three of the four Underworld films so far, and is a mainstay of these series. Given that vampires are immortal, there should be no reason why Selene should not be a part of any film in the series.

On the other hand, Theo James is coming back! Repeating his role as David; a character that was presented in the last film. Apparently there are two new female leads to add to join David in leading the cast of vampires and werewolves. And the new storyline seems to follow David's life and interactions.

Underworld is a series of action horror films directed by Len Wiseman, Patrick Tatopoulos, Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. The first film, Underworld, was released in 2003, which tells the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a Death Dealer focused on destroying the Lycans in belief that they killed her family. The second film, Underworld: Evolution, was released in 2006. The film follows as Selene takes Michael Corvin; a human bitten by Lucian, the leader of the Lycan group and later also by Selene, resulting to becoming a Lycan/Vampire hybrid, to a vampire safehouse and plans to return to Viktor's manor to awaken Marcus, the last Vampire Elder. While the third film, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans; prologue to the series chronicling the backgrounds of the vampire-lycan war, was released on January 23, 2009. And the fourth film, Underworld: Awakening, the sequel to Underworld: Evolution, was released on January 20, 2012. In this film, humans have been exposed to the existence of Vampires and Lycans, therefore they are trying to destroy both species.

Taking the rumors aside, Director Len Wiseman recently revealed to IGN:

"Another film is being developed with Kate (Beckinsale), possibly as well."

He also added that the follow-up would be somehow a separate part of the Underworld universe like 2009's Rise of the Lycans-but still link with the core movie.

Filming schedule is set to begin in the spring of 2015. While release date is scheduled for some time in 2016. The new spin-off is said to be entitled, Underworld: The Next Generation and will be written by Cory Goodman who previously worked on the 2011 film "Priest."

Also, Wiseman revealed that they're developing a TV series based on the Underworld movies.
