Three Most Offensive Halloween Costume Ideas 2014; What You Should Never Wear And Why You Should Never Wear Them

Oct 26, 2014 03:10 PM EDT | By Felicity Maris Modesto

With all the Halloween costume ideas 2014 people can come up with, there seems to be no limit to what they can wear for the coming party - and that is only five days away.

But there should be.

So how do you draw the line distinguishing offensive Halloween costume ideas 2014 from those that are not?

Here are the top three most offensive Halloween costume ideas 2014, and the reasons why you should never wear them, as explained by Huffington Post:

  1. National costumes, indigenous people's costumes or any culturally related garbs

These should be off limits. No one wants the rich history of their native country or people ridiculed by others who hardly value the culture and are just out wearing it for fun and merrymaking purposes.

If you think you are honoring them, you are wrong. On the contrary, you are insulting them because wearing such garbs is considered culturally inappropriate. A few good examples would be these celebrities' costumes on CNN.

2. Men wearing explicit costumes that lasciviously and blatantly exhibit women's body parts

The same thing applies if they don frocks that make fun of corpulent women or have messages that are sexually degrading or image shaming. As Mindy Kaling would put it (She shared this during her interview with Parade Magazine.), using the body or any part of it as a gauge for someone's value is hurtful.

3. Any costume that mocks social issues

Social issues, whether they be politically related or not, are always serious. Channeling them to create a visual parody does not make you come across as smart or funny. A good example is this image of a smiling suicide bomber boy and the pedophile priest on Worldwide Interweb or the Ebola hazmat suit image above.

Also, it is not advisable to dress up like a hobo or a mental patient. In so doing, you do not only dehumanize them according to Down Trend, but also mock the seriousness of their differentiated situations.
