Former "Today" show anchor Ann Curry will return to the NBC program on Friday to report live from Aurora, Colorado on the tragic mass murder that took place at a movie theater which left 12 people dead and 59 injured.

According to a tweet from @datelinenbc, Curry will step in to cover the tragic event that occurred during a midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises." "NBC's @AnnCurry will anchor a special edition of #Dateline, LIVE from Aurora, Colorado, tonight at 9pm/8c," the tweet read.

Curry will also co-host the network's weekend editions of "Today" on Saturday and Sunday with Savannah Guthrie. The network also expects Curry to report on Friday evening's "Nightly News." Curry was replaced earlier this month following a shake up at the morning show. Curry was on the show for 15 years.

James Holmes, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning. Holmes, 24, is a University of Colorado-Denver graduate school dropout and neighbors described him as a "loner", reclusive type who ignored other residents when they said hello. Holmes lived in three-floor apartment in the Denver suburb of North Aurora - about four miles from the theater where the killings occurred. See photo of James Holmes here.

Holmes is originally from San Diego, California and moved to Colorado to study. San Diego police read a statement from Holmes' California family saying that their hearts go out to those involved. He was dressed in all black and had on a gas mask, when he raided the movie theater. Some movie goers thought the smoke was part of the movies special effects, according to Associated Press. Holmes is in police custody, and the FBI says there is no indication that incident is tied to any terrorist groups.
