Audiences may have flinched a couple of times after seeing bloody hands playing the drums, but critics sure have welcomed that feeling of anxiety while watching the 2014 film "Whiplash", and they've got a 2015 Oscar nomination to prove it.

The 2014 film, "Whiplash" about a young jazz player being terrorized by his own maestro seems to have gathered a small fan-base, but critics have been raving about the movie since it has been released during the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in January.

"Whiplash" is a story about "Andrew Neiman [who] is a 19-year-old jazz drummer, dreaming of greatness but unsure if his dream will ever come true. Haunted by the failed writer career of his father, Andrew is determined to rise to the top of the country's most elite music conservatory."

The official synopsis continues, "One night, Terence Fletcher, a conductor equally known for his talent for teaching as he is for the terrifying method of his instruction, discovers Andrew practicing the drums. Even though Fletcher says very little to him that night, he ignites in Andrew a passion to achieve his goal. To Andrew's surprise, the next day, Fletcher requests that he be transferred into his band. This single act changes the young man's life forever."

Academy Award nominated film "Whiplash" has gained praises from critics worldwide, receiving a "certified fresh" score from Rotten Tomatoes, with 96%. The site reviewed "Whiplash" as "intense, inspiring, and well-acted. 'Whiplash' is a brilliant sophomore effort from Director Damien Chazelle and a riveting vehicle for stars J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller."

Apart from earning $3 Million in the box office, "Whiplash" has been nominated not for one Oscar 2015 category but five. The 2015 Oscar categories "Whiplash" is nominated for includes Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for star J.K. Simmons, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

The 87th Academy Awards or Oscars 2015 happens on Feb. 22, 2015.
