Director Gareth Edwards Is Working On 'Godzilla 2;' Japan's Toho Co. Announces Their Own Reboot

"Godzilla," 2014's blockbuster that made more than $500 million at the box office is getting a sequel from Gareth Edwards.

But followers of "Godzilla" are worried that the sequel might be delyed from its original plan after the director announced that he will be helming a "Star Wars" spinoff that is due out on Dec. 16, 2016.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm," Edwards said in a statement.

But Legendary Pictures CEP Thomas Tull is confident that the director will have enough time to fit both "Godzilla 2" and "Star Wars" in his schedule.

"Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would be a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth's imprint on the Star Wars universe."

Elsewhere, Toho Co. Ltd. is announcing their own reboot set to be released in 2016, almost a decade after their last film "Godzilla: Final Wars."

The Japanese based company is reclaiming their beloved title, setting up a commitee called Godzilla Strategic Conference headed by veteran producer Taicha Ueda.

"The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood" with hopes that Godzilla "will represent Japan and be loved around the world," said Ueda according to Variety.

Toho has not yet announced a director to lead the project.
