Evelyn Lozada Files for Divorce from Former NFL Player Chad Johnson, 'Domestic Violence Not Ok'

Aug 15, 2012 12:02 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Evelyn Lozada has filed for from NFL player Chad Johnson (formerly Ochocinco) after the football star was arrested for allegedly head-butting her last weekend.

The couple has been married for just 41 days. Lozada claims in her divorce filing, submitted this morning in Florida, that her marriage is "irretrievably broken." The couple exchanged vows on July 4. In an exclusive statement to ET, Lozada opens up for the first time about the incident that led to the split.

"Given the recent events that have taken place, Evelyn has decided to file for divorce and move on with her life," Lozada's lawyer, Michael B. Gilden, told the TV show "The Insider" in a statement.

"I would like to apologize to everyone for the recent events that have occurred. I would like to wish Evelyn well and will never say anything bad about her because I truly love her to death," Johnson said in a statement posted to his website Tuesday.

"I will continue to be positive and train hard for another opportunity in the NFL. To all the fans and supporters I have disappointed, you have my sincerest apologies. I will stay positive and get through this tough period in my life."

Johnson, 34, was arrested Saturday night, on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. The fight got heated and resulted in "Occhocinco" head-butting Evelyn so hard that she is reported to have had lacerations on her forehead.

Other sources say that Evelyn spent several hours in the hospital. According to the report, Lozada "fled on foot to a neighbor's house to get away from Johnson." A police report notes that Johnson drove around the neighborhood looking for Lozada, who had called police from the neighbor's home.

Johnson was released from jail on $2,500 bond Sunday at 10 a.m. EST- and hours later released by the Dolphins.
