The sequel to the 1986 "Top Gun" movie is in the works! Question is, will Tom Cruise be in it? Producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks about "Top Gun 2" details, possible release date and casting.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks about the plot details of "Top Gun 2," revealing more than the return of original cast member, Tom Cruise. He said early last year, "We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer."
He continued on and shared bits and pieces on how Tom Cruise's Maverick Mitchell will fit in into the sequel. "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of the drones," Bruckheimer shared. "Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."
Talks of "Top Gun 2" has been on the board since late 2010 when Paramount pictures approached six-time Academy Awardee Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott for the sequel. Although the draft for "Top Gun 2" was slated to include Tom Cruise' Maverick Mitchell in a smaller role, the "Edge of Tomorrow (2014) star still confirmed his return for the sequel in 2012.
The death of Tony Scott in the same year lead the "Top Gun 2" development to a standstill, however, Jerry Bruckheimer insisted that the sequel will continue development and will soon reach the big screen.
In a report by Flickering Myth, Bruckheimer said in 2013:
"For 30 years we've been trying to make a sequel and we're not going to stop." He continued, "We still want to do it with Tom [Cruise] and Paramount is still interested in making it. What Tom tells me is that matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick. It's something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we'll get it made."
"Top Gun 2" release date was initially set last year but has since been delayed. No word yet on a new premiere date.
