It has been confirmed that Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum will headline "Independence Day 2," which is scheduled for release on June 24, 2016.

The 1996 box office hit earned more than $800 million that's why some people are wondering why it took Dreamworks this long to make a follow up to a successful movie?

The 62-year old actor will be reprising his role as David Levinson in the sequel while the 25-year old Aussie actor's character remains unknown. Director Roland Emmerich shared the good news first to his Twitter followers. "Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the next two pieces of the #IndependenceDay sequel," he wrote.

He also shared a photo of Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum on Facebook and wrote: "First you strategically position your pieces, and when the time is right, you strike." Before the director revealed the lead stars of "Independence 2", he also announced that Jessie Usher will be joining the cast.

So how did the "Survivor's Remorse" star got the attention of the producers? Ronald Emmerich shared the story on Facebook. "My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition. As they say, the rest is history!" he revealed.

The 23-year old actor was proud to be part of the "Independence 2" cast and shared news clips of the announcement on Instagram. "...guess the cats out the bag now. Thank you God for this blessing. & thank you everyone for the congratulations!" he wrote.

According to Movie Pilot, Jessie Usher will play the son of Will Smith's character, Captain Steven Hiller, in the sequel. Does that mean he's replacing the superstar of the first movie? Roland Emmerich already confirmed a few years ago that the 46-year old actor won't be returning in "Independence 2".

"Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," the director told NY Daily News. He also revealed that half of the cast will come from the first film and the other half are new. Since Jeff Goldblum is already confirmed to return in "Independence 2", I wonder who else would be reprising their role in the sequel.
