Walmart, Safeway Among Stores Affected by Salmonella Egg Recall Across
Boxes of eggs are seen at a Walmart supermarket in Houston, Texas, on May 15, 2025. Walmart on Thursday reported another solid quarter behind sales gains in the United States, but warned of higher prices and continued uncertainty over President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Nearly 1.7 million cartons of eggs have been recalled after dozens of people across the United States became ill with Salmonella, federal health officials confirmed.

The eggs, sourced from the August Egg Company based in Hilmar, California, were sold under several brand names in grocery stores, including Walmart, Safeway, Save Mart, Raley's, and FoodMaxx.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the voluntary recall after finding that eggs produced between February 3 and May 15 may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 79 people have become ill, with 21 hospitalized. Most of the illnesses—63 cases—were reported in California, the NY Times said.

A few cases have also been reported in states like Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, Kentucky, and New Jersey. No deaths have been reported.

Eggs sold in several states, including Arizona, California, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, and Wyoming, are being recalled due to safety concerns.

Eggs Sold Under Major Brands Recalled for Possible Contamination

The affected cartons have sell-by dates from March 4 to June 19, 2025, and include plant codes P-6562 or CA-5330 with Julian dates ranging from 32 to 126.

"If you have these eggs in your fridge, do not eat them," the CDC advised. "Throw them away or return them to the store." They also recommend washing any surfaces or kitchen items that come into contact with the eggs with hot, soapy water.

According to TheHill, the recall includes many popular store-brand eggs like Marketside, Simple Truth, O Organics, Clover, and Sunnyside. A complete list of recalled products can be found on the websites of the FDA and CDC.

In a public statement, the August Egg Company said, "Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling these products as some may still be in consumers' homes."

The company added that it immediately redirected all eggs from the affected facility to a processing plant where eggs are pasteurized, a process that kills bacteria like Salmonella.

They also stated that they are conducting a "stringent internal review" to prevent this from happening again.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause illness, often resulting in fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Most people recover without needing medical care, but young children, seniors, and people with weak immune systems may require treatment or even hospitalization.

The CDC reports that Salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million illnesses in the United States each year.
