At Home Keeps Two Stores Open as Bankruptcy Restructuring Unfolds

At Home, the popular home décor and furniture chain, is keeping two stores open that were originally set to close as part of its bankruptcy plan.

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 16, had announced the closure of 26 underperforming stores across the country.

But now, stores in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Princeton, New Jersey, will stay in business.

The company blamed "economic pressures" and high operating costs for its financial troubles.

These include rising interest rates, growing inflation, and increased customs fees due to tariffs.

In a court filing, At Home shared that these issues made it harder to stay profitable in today's retail market.

The company, based in Coppell, Texas, is not alone. Other major retailers like Joann Fabrics, Big Lots, and Party City have also filed for bankruptcy this year.

At Home's filing included a plan to eliminate nearly $2 billion in debt and bring in $200 million in new funding to help keep operations going during the restructuring, TheStreet said.

At Home Holds On to Two Stores as Fans Worry

Despite its challenges, At Home said in a press release that it remains focused on serving customers.

"Our stores and the teams that support them remain customer-focused and committed to serving and inspiring customers," the company shared.

This message came as some shoppers worried about losing one of their go-to places for budget-friendly furniture and seasonal decorations.

According to USA Today, the company had around 7,170 employees at the time of the bankruptcy filing. Six locations had already closed before the filing.

Under the new restructuring plan, At Home will shift ownership to lenders and hedge funds in New York and San Francisco in hopes of stabilizing its finances and returning to growth.

While 24 stores are still scheduled to shut their doors by September 30, the decision to save two locations offers a small bit of good news for fans and workers alike. The two saved stores are:

3201 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
301 Nassau Park Boulevard, Princeton, New Jersey

Founded in 1979 and once known as Garden Ridge, At Home has grown to over 260 stores in 40 states.
