Ed Sheeran On Zayn Malik Leaving One Direction: ‘Let Him Be Happy!' Does He Support His Friend’s Decision?

Apr 11, 2015 09:39 PM EDT | By Paige Lee

Ed Sheeran and Zayn Malik, as well as the rest of One Direction, are well-known good friends. So it's only natural for the "Thinking Out Loud" singer to voice out his own opinions about the latter's current situation.

According to the red-headed singer, Malik should be given a chance to be happy but then again, being a "normal 22-year-old" might not be as exciting as being a part of arguably the most successful boyband in the world today.

"Fair play to him, let him be happy," the Grammy-nominated crooner told Australia's Dan and Maz (via Sugarscape) about Malik's decision to leave the band. "If he's not happy...then...but also being a normal 22-year-old's pretty boring...All I'm saying is, being a normal 22-year-old probably isn't as fun as being in One Direction. Just saying."

He also spoke out about the same issue a couple of weeks ago. In the same way, Ed Sheeran wished Zayn Malik happiness.

"I think whatever makes him happy. The most important thing in life is to be happy, and if he was unhappy in that situation then don't stay in it," the 24-year-old shared.

"You don't want to make yourself unhappy just to earn money, that's not what life's about," he continued, adding that Malik should enjoy life.

"I think the difference between me taking a break and him taking a break is he has four other people to worry about. I'll definitely take a break, but it won't be a noticeable break because no one will be like 'he's left the band,'" he further shared.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell denied rumors of animosity among the members. According to the producer, the boys still treat each other like brothers after getting over the initial shock.

"You can't work together for this long if you're not friends. You have little spats, everyone does," he added.
