Report: Bidding Goodbye To 700 McDonald’s Restaurants In U.S., Saying Hello To Canada’s McLobster

Jun 20, 2015 11:39 AM EDT | By Jon Lindley Agustin

McDonald's, one of the biggest fast food restaurants in the US, is reportedly closing 700 underperforming restaurants this year, situated in more than 36,000 total locations, Business Insider recently reported.

This decision by the executives is reportedly because the closures are "outpacing the new fast-food restaurants in America," and that sales have been on a slump for the previous years.

"Customers want to personalize their meals with locally relevant ingredients," said former CEO Don Thomspon in the report. "They also want to enjoy eating in a contemporary inviting atmosphere. And they want choices: choices in how they order, choices in what they order, and how they're served."

The position was vacated and was filled in by Steve Easterbrook midst reported loss in market share of the Mcdonald's restaurants in the US, but is reportedly improving its production overseas particularly in Europe and Asia.

Bidding goodbye

A separate Business Insider report said Mcdonald's restaurants in the US "enjoyed rapid expansion" by providing food services at affordable prices. It is said to have even thrived during the recession because of its Dollar Menu, the report added.

However, emerging chains such as Chipotle, and Five Guys Burgers and Fries have reportedly marketed themselves with better food and taste that took away the customers of McDonald's. Business Insider said there is a new breed of "better burger" served in these chains.

Saying hello to the Canada market

Despite the closing down of some McDonald's restaurants in the US, the chain in Canada are exploring on a new menu that will feature the "flavours of Canada," another Business Insider report said.

For instance, the McLobster is going to return for the promotion, as well as other regional food including Maple & Bacon Poutine, the Western BBQ Burger, Cottage Country Chicken, and the Chocolate Nanaimo Sundae.

McDonald's is reportedly expanding its markets in Asia and in Europe.
