‘Sherlock’ Season 4: Will Benedict Cumberbatch Join Comic Con This Year? Will Producers Unveil A Definite Release Date By Then?

Fans' questions about "Sherlock" season 4 will be answered this July 11 during the San Diego Comic Con. For now, the biggest mystery that faithful followers of the British show is currently wondering is whether or not lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will make an appearance during the convention.

If the announcement from Screenrant is to be believed, the popular duo won't be joining the panel this year.

"[Producers] Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue and actor Rupert Graves (Lestrade) will hold court in Ballroom 20 from 3.45pm to 5.15pm," Digital Spy UK further reported.

Becoming a new father and preparing for his role as Hamlet at The Barbican, the 38-year-old actor would have been too busy to join the panel.

Showrunner Steven Moffat previously revealed that they have a hard time scheduling shoots because of Cumberbatch and Freeman's very busy schedules.

"[Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman] don't need 'Sherlock' anymore, so we have to persuade them to do it, which is fair enough," he shared to Newsbeat then.

Nevertheless, they still agreed to continue with "Sherlock" season 4 because they "love it very much".

If Cumberbatch wasn't too busy, he could definitely enjoy his time at this year's San Diego Comic Con, considering that he had a really great time during last year's visit.

On the other hand, would Moffat and Vertue announce a more definite release date for "Sherlock" season 4? According to unofficial reports, the fourth instalment could air in early 2017, following the traditional two-year wait for the Emmy-winning series.

To tide fans over, BBC will be releasing a Christmas special of the show. Cumberbatch, Freeman and other cast members were spotted filming for the episode in Victorian-era clothes. Executive producers Moffat and Mark Gatiss later confirmed that the special will be set in the original era of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic books.
