Project Morpheus Isn’t All About Games; PS4 VR Headset Collaborates With Sony Pictures, IMAX To Promote Joseph Gordon-Levitt Film ‘The Walk’

We saw a good number of Project Morpheus games at last month's E3 2015 but the PS4 VR headset isn't all about video games. A collaboration with Sony Pictures and IMAX proves virtual reality's appeal also extends to other forms of entertainment.

Project Morpheus will be used to present a promotional activity for the upcoming Joseph Gordon-Levitt film, "The Walk," according to VR Focus.

"In the accompanying film, 'The Walk,' Philippe Petit (Gordon-Levitt), guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), is aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, who overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and overcome their mad plan."

Directed by Robert Zemeckis with a screenplay by Zemeckis and Christopher Browne, the film is based on the book "To Reach the Clouds" by Petit. The biopic focuses on the French high-wire artist's tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers on August 7, 1974.

As with Project Morpheus games, the VR headset puts users in the thick of the action.

"'Can You Walk the Walk?' invites users to try Petit's walk for themselves - stepping out onto the wire to make Petit's historic pass between the towers."

Before the collaboration was announced, Project Morpheus head Shuhei Yoshida told Digital Spy UK at E3 2015 that they were working to bring non-gaming content to the VR headset.

"We're not talking specifically about non-game content just yet but we are definitely working with companies who are producing quality non-game panorama video content so they can bring it to Project Morpheus. It's passive entertainment but communicates the strengths of VR very well," he said.

"The Walk" will premiere at the New York Film Festival first on September 15 before it hits theaters on September 30.

A few Project Morpheus games and the VR headset itself is slated for a first half of 2016 release date.
