McDonald's has always had nicknames, Mickey D's for example, but don't expect the burger chain to go changing its name to suit the public anytime soon. Unless you're in Australia, of course.

McDonald's will temporarily change its name to "Macca's," the Aussie's nickname for the fast food franchise, for the month of January. This is in celebration of Australia Day, which falls on January 26 - a move that is its first such globally.

"We're incredibly proud to embrace our 'Australian-only' nickname," said Mark Lollback, the company's chief marketing officer in Australia, in a statement.

"What better way to show Aussies how proud we are to be a part of the Australian community than change our store signs to the name the community has given us?"

"Macca's" is apparently very popular with about 50 percent of Australians regularly using the nickname, according to various surveys.

As of this week, 13 locations will change their signage until Feb. 4 when everything will turn back to normal.

According to Reuters, Australian English has a number of unique turns of phrase. According to a national survey, "Macca's" is the second most recognized Australianism, just behind "footy" for Australian rules football.
