Singer Joni Mitchell Brain Aneurysm Recovery: Songwriter Can ‘Speak Well’ Following Surgery

Aug 05, 2015 12:25 PM EDT | By Joanna Garado

Joni Mitchell's recovery from brain aneurysm is expected to turn out well after the legendary singer-songwriter reportedly had undergone surgery.

On March 31, the 71-year-old artist was found unconscious in her Bel Air home in Los Angeles due to brain aneurysm.

Contrary to reports following her surgery, Mitchell can still "speak well" and is going through physical therapy for her to regain the ability to walk, according to a statement from Leslie Morris, Mitchell's conservator.

"The truth is that Joni is speaking, and she's speaking well," Morris said in the statement. "She is not walking yet, but she will be in the near future as she is undergoing daily therapies."

On the other hand, Mitchell's longtime friend and songwriting partner, David Crosby described Morris as "the best of us."

"I love her. She was my old lady at one point. She's probably the best of us - probably the greatest living singer-songwriter," Crosby reportedly said to the Huffington Post. "We're all holding our breath and thinking a good thought, hoping that it's going to turn out okay."

Contrary to the statement released by Morris, Crosby also believes that Mitchell has not yet regained her ability to speak.

"I have not spoken to her. To my knowledge, she is not speaking yet," Crosby said.

He also pointed out that Joni Mitchell's brain aneurysm recovery is going to be tough, considering that "she took a terrible hit."

"She had an aneurysm, and nobody found her for a while. And she's going to have to struggle back from it the way your struggle back from a traumatic brain injury," Crosby laments.

Joni Mitchell is a Canadian singer best known for her chart-topping hits "Both Sides, Now," "Chelsea Morning," "The Circle Game," "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Urge for Going."
