Charlie Hunnam Wants Less CGI On 'Pacific Rim 2' As Guillermo Del Toro Prepares For Epic Battle

Aug 05, 2015 11:45 PM EDT | By Sherylyn Toda

Following his successful appearance in Guillermo del Toro's mech movie, Charlie Hunnam is once again going to set foot in "Pacific Rim 2."

But while the 35-year-old English actor is reportedly very excited to return to the sequel, he revealed in an interview with EW that he would want for "Pacific Rim 2" to have less CGI and instead focus more on the characters' story.

"I think world creation and monster creation and all of that stuff is exciting as a secondary element of storytelling. When it becomes more important than storytelling, I get very nervous, and you sort of lose me a little bit. Although we tried very hard on Pacific Rim to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling."

While he is happy with how fans' reacted to "Pacific Rim," he stated that he just really wants to give the human characters more "depth," instead of having the movie focus on heavy CGI, relying on the battle between the kaijus and mech.

"I hope that we are able to remedy that a little bit going into the second. Not to say I wasn't proud of the film. I really liked it, and I felt like it delivered exactly what it was supposed to. But I do feel like we could have maybe plumbed the depths of the character and the storytelling a little bit more."

In an article released by Collider, noting Hunnam's point, it seemed like there's a chance that "Pacific Rim 2" would feature less CGI after reportedly learning that Legendary Entertainment is going to have a lower budget for the sequel.

"In fact, to Hunnam's point, it's possible that the lower budget will allow del Toro to craft even more character-centric scenes in Pacific Rim 2 instead of having to live up to a giant budget by injecting more action," the publication claimed.

And while reports of less CGI have been reported, Guillermo del Toro is reportedly preparing for an "epic battle" between the kaijus and robots.

Yahoo! reported that Charlie Hunnam and the rest of the cast will star filming "Pacific Rim 2" late this year in November.

And while the release date to "Pacific Rim 2" has been delayed until Aug. 4, 2017, del Toro assured fans that an "epic battle" between kaijus and the robot monsters is going to happen in the sequel.

"We have an epic battle at the end [that] we started designing a couple weeks ago," he revealed in the interview.
