Google Cardboard Version 2 Supports Bigger Smartphones, Easier To Assemble; Tech Specs Out!

Official tech specs for Google Cardboard version 2 have just been released last week providing DIYers and third-party manufacturers a blueprint to make their own versions of the affordable VR headset.

The tech specs follow Cardboard version 2's unveiling at Google's I/O developers' conference back in May.

"Now the specs have been updated for the new version, which accommodates 6-inch phones, is easier to assemble than its predecessor and includes a cardboard button instead of the original magnetic one," according to VentureBeat.

Along with the tech specs, Google also released official drawings of Cardboard version 2 which third-party manufacturers and individuals can follow. Companies can then join the Works with Google Cardboard program.

The program is meant to consolidate all versions of the Cardboard VR headset as well as apps and games that can be used with it.

"This standard opens the door for anyone with a smartphone to try VR," VB said.

Google Cardboard version 2 improves upon the original version's design and keeps it compatible with devices with bigger displays such as the Nexus 6.

For the uninitiated, Cardboard is Google's answer to the explosion of virtual reality headsets from various manufacturers. But instead of going the premium route, the online search giant went the opposite direction and offered a low-cost entry-level product.

According to Android Community, Google "has built up a good user base and app ecosystem by allowing third party manufacturers to build the cardboard headsets and sell them quickly."

In doing so, it has beaten other VR headsets - which include the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift and HTC and Valve's Vive - in going to the market.

With Google Cardboard version 2 tech specs out, it shouldn't be long for manufacturers to come up with their own take on the VR headset. Avid DIYers who can't wait can make this their next project. The specs and images can be downloaded here.
