‘Room Scale’ Pulling Back ‘War Thunder’ Support For HTC Vive? Headed To VR Headset ‘Eventually’

Sep 12, 2015 12:16 PM EDT | By Jason Fonbuena

Room Scale, the HTC Vive VR headset's main features, is the reason why "War Thunder" support for the virtual reality device will have to come "eventually."

Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev said as much during an interview with VR Focus at the sidelines of last month's Gamescom 2015.

"The thing is, HTC Vive is a very cool device but not really gamer friendly," Yudintsev said.

"I mean that it requires a lot of space. So, personally, I like it, it's very cool, you can walk with it but it's not required for 'War Thunder' to walk," he added.

For the uninitiated, Room Scale is Valve's position-tracking technology that allows Vive users to move within a space of up to 15 feet by 15 feet. The physical movements are then replicated in-game.

On the other hand, "War Thunder" is a free-to-play multiplayer online game that puts players in the pilot or driver's seat of World War II-era aircraft and tanks.

"So we cannot use all the advantages of the HTC vive because the main advantage is that you have that space to walk," Yudintsev said.

The Gaijin Entertainment boss did say that "War Thunder" will "eventually" support the HTC Vive VR headset.

Given that it's a "seated experience," the game can't make use of Room Scale. But as VR Focus pointed out, Valve isn't requiring developers to use it.

Even commenters on the website couldn't help but be puzzled with Yudintsev's statement on why the game won't support the Vive sooner.

"It can offer a room scale experience for those who develop for it, but it's just as capable as any other HMD [head-mounted device] when it comes to seated experiences," one commenter said.

"Just because the Vive has the capability of being used in a large area doesn't mean it *has* to be," another one pointed out.

VR Focus did say that "War Thunder" "could still arrive on the device."

The HTC Vive VR headset will arrive in "limited quantity" later this year. The bulk of the shipments will happen in Q1 2016.
