Coca-Cola Spent More than $118 Million on Health Research over 5 Years, Support Solutions for Public Health Issues

Sandy Douglass, the president of Coca-Cola North America said in a transparency statement that the company had spent $118.6 million in funding research for health-related issues.

He said that the company is doing this to support solutions to the public health issues that are facing the world.

"Over the last five years, we have provided $21.8 million to fund scientific research and $96.8 million to support health and well-being partnerships," Douglas said.

He also said that the company said that they are sharing this information to be an effective partner against obesity.

"Our engagement and financial support of these well-respected experts, institutions and organizations were made with the best of intentions - to inform our business, support our local communities and support solutions to the public health issues facing people across the United States and around the world," Douglas said.

He also added that they will be updating this information every six months.

ABC News adds that The Coca-Cola Company said last month plans to be more transparent about the various health programs and research that it funds.

This is part of the company's shift to focus more on well-being.

The company has been under fire after a report last month from The New York Times said that it has contributed $1.5 million last year in financial and logistical help to Global Energy Balance Network.

Global Balance promotes the argument that people are overly fixated in what they eat and drink and not enough attention to exercise when it comes to health.

ABC News adds that Muhtar Kent, chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, was not happy with how the public is viewing the company after what it did.

"I am disappointed that some actions we have taken to fund scientific research and health and well-being programs have served only to create more confusion and mistrust," he said.

ABC News adds that Coca-Cola will start its efforts regarding transparency in the U.S., and then expand it internationally.

Douglas said in the statement that in the coming weeks and months ahead they will be listening and learning and develop ways to properly inform and guide their path forward.

He also said that this transparency statement is the beginning of a journey that will make Coca-Cola a better company and better local community partner.
