Target Expands Price-Matching Policy, Match Online Prices of 29 Retailers, Marks Big Step for US Retailer

Oct 01, 2015 04:55 AM EDT | By Jean-Claude Arnobit

Target Corp. will be expanding its price-matching policy and match the online prices of 29 retailers, up from five, according to a report from the StarTribune.

The change in policy marks a big step for the retail company.

The StarTribune adds that matching online prices were once considered as a risky move for brick-and-mortar companies, like Target, to pull off.

But with the emergence of the internet and technology, matching online prices became the norm.

Brian Yarbrough, a retail analyst at Edward Jones, told StarTribune that companies need to do this in this new world.

"It's what companies have to do in this new world of retail," he said. "Pricing has become so transparent over the last few years."

The Washington Post adds that the move also highlights what Target will be doing to further increase its e-commerce business.

The company increased its e-commerce business by 30 percent in its latest quarter report.

The Washington Post adds that Target's latest move shows that the company is trying to align its online price-match policy with its brick-and-mortar stores.

This move also helps create a smooth shopping experience for customers whenever they jump from shopping in stores to online.

The Washington Post adds that Jason Goldberg, the president of Target.com, said in a recent meeting with store managers that this move is important.

"These are simple changes, but they mean a lot for our guests," he said.

The updated policy of Target's price-matching will include companies like Macys.com and Staples.com, according to StarTribune.

It also includes retailers that are online-only, like Diapers.com, Drugstore.com, Newegg.com, and Wayfair.com.

The StarTribune adds that Target will also be matching the online prices of warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam's Club.

These clubs usually require a membership for customers to shop there.

The StarTribune adds that the updated policy goes into effect on Thursday, October 1, 2015.
