Twitter Expands Availability of Buy Button, Allows Millions of Merchants to Sell Products Through Tweets

Oct 01, 2015 05:01 AM EDT | By Jean-Claude Arnobit

Twitter Inc. has announced in a blog post a new partnership with three e-commerce platform that will expand the availability of its Buy Now button.

The new partnership allows millions of merchants to sell a product through a tweet.

Twitter said in the blog post that it has partnered with Bigcommerce, Demandware, and Shopify, three of the largest e-commerce platforms in the U.S., to allow the use of its Buy Now button.

Merchants who use one of these e-commerce platforms will be able to use Twitter's Buy Now button and sell their products through a tweet.

Twitter also said in the blog post that their new partnership, which is powered by Stripe Relay, allows people to have "more opportunities to discover and purchase products" through Twitter.

Their Buy Now button also makes it easier for businesses to drive more conversion and connect directly with consumers.

The New York Times adds that Twitter's announcement comes as platforms from other rivals are also beginning to offer direct e-commerce from their services.

Google's YouTube recently announced the availability of placing a buy button in other people's video for merchants to take advantage of.

Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram are also testing their own buy buttons to allow their merchants to sell products directly from their site, according to The New York Times.

The New York Times reported, though, that Twitter, with 316 million users globally, is the first social network site to make the buy button technology widely available.

The company has been testing this technology since last year.

Nathan Hubbard, the head of commerce of Twitter, told The New York Times in an interview that the company has moved forward with this expansion.

"We have gone from testing this with hundreds of merchants to millions of merchants," he said. "It's built into the software that they use every day to manage their business."

He also told The New York Times that he expects users won't be seeing a lot of Buy Now buttons in their service outright, after this announcement.

He also said that half of their Twitter users already turn to the service when making purchases.

Twitter said in the blog post that the Buy Now button is currently available to U.S. merchants only.
