In what could be a first, a NASA astronaut a made a toy dinosaur in outer space Space.com reported.

"Made in space!" astronaut Karen Nyberg an Expedition 37 crew member on the Soyuz spacecraft said in a caption on the photo sharing website Pinterest.

"I made this dinosaur for my son last Sunday, September 22," she wrote.

Nyberg made the creation while onboard the International Space Station by using scraps from a variety of materials.

"It is made out of Velcro-like fabric that lines the Russian food containers [that are] found here on the International Space Station," Nyberg said. "It is lightly stuffed with scraps from a used T-shirt."

The dinosaur has an olive green back and a lighter green belly. It's stitched together with white thread. Astronauts or cosmonauts as they are known in Russia have transported stuffed dolls to space to help with their missions, and tell when they have entered orbit Collectspace.com reported. They do this by suspending the dolls from the Soyuz space craft's control panel and seeing if they float. If this is the case, then the crew knows they are in its orbital circle. While in outer space, Nyberg stays in contact with her 3-year-old son Jack by sending him short videos daily.

In addition, Nyberg's son Jack and husband Doug Hurley send photos and videos also send her multi-media while she is up in space.

Hurley is also an astronaut who flew on the final space shuttle mission in 2011.

One of Nyberg's pinterest photos consists of an orange and pink painting from Jack, which says "For Mommy." This hanging on the wall in her designated area on the spacecraft

Nyberg began exploring with the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin May 28 when it headed to the International Space Station.
